A membrane isa selectivebarrier that permits theseparation of certain species in a fluid by combination of sieving and sorptiondiffusion mechanism. Separation is achieved by selectivelypassing (permeating) oneor more components of a stream  throughthe membrane while retarding thepassage of one or more other components. 

Membranes can selectively separate componentsover a wide range of particle sizes and molecular weights, from macromolecularmaterials such as starch and protein to monovalent ions. Membranes have gainedan important place in chemical technology and are used in a broad range ofapplications.

The key properties determining membraneperformance are high selectivity and fluxes, good mechanical, chemical andthermal stability under operating conditions, low fouling tendencies and goodcompatibility with the operating environment; and cost effective anddefect-free production
